New Year Message 2013

Dear Sponsors, Members, Partners and Participants,

The MAABN team and Board send you all their best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year 2013!

A Message from the Presidents, William Peterson and Richard Bower

Looking Back at 2012

We are very pleased to report that 2012 was one of the most successful in the MAABN‘s history. This was not only thanks to our highly popular programme of monthly Language Apéros at La Boâte (Marseille) and Château La Pioline (Aix-en-Provence) at which our sponsors present their activities, but also thanks to our ever-growing presence within the business community.

Artisans13_smallThe MAABN partnered the Conseil Général des Bouches du Rhône, the Chambre des Métiers, the City of Glasgow and the British Consulate in organizing the Scottish presence at the Artisans 13 trade fair. It took part in the actions of the Union des Chambres de Commerce et Club d’Affaires Bilateraux (UCCCAB), contributed local business intelligence to the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) and accompanied the British Council’s set-up in Marseille and British Ambassador Sir Peter Ricketts’ visit in June. It also organized a number of conferences over the year covering subjects as diverse as US and British tourism to the area, the global financial crisis -with a special screening of Cleveland‘Cleveland vs. Wall Street’, Marseille Provence European Capital of Culture and a British entrepreneur’s efforts to start up his butcher’s business here in France.

Through the MAABN, the Anglo-American community had its voice heard on some key issues that concern us. MAABN on-line surveys of its members’ opinions contributed to decisions in 2012 to open a new air route from Marseille to New York, a new British Airways service to London Heathrow and to resolving a transport problem to one of the international schools. The MAABN will also be consulted in a 2013 feasibility study for another international school in the area.

The year 2012 finished with our very well-attended and successful Christmas Party at the Hotel Pullman Palm Beach in the presence of Simon Taylor, the British Consul in chateau_ricard_jardinsMarseille, and Mrs. Taylor. The MAABN‘s social calendar now includes both a Christmas party and a summer party, the most recent of which in June saw more than one hundred guests enjoy Ricard International’s hospitality at the Château Ricard in the presence of former US Consul Philip Richards and Simon Taylor. These celebrations are made even more memorable by the sponsors’ generous donations of prizes to the highly popular MAABN tombola.

We approach 2013 with renewed vigour, with the team developing a new programme for the year which we hope will interest you all and inspire you to attend a large number of events. Details of the programme will be posted very shortly on the website, with announcements of course in the increasingly informative newsletter and -for all fully-paid up members- on the members’ webspace.

We mentioned earlier our sponsors/partners and, of course, without them the MAABN wouldn’t exist. We would like to take this opportunity to mention all our corporate sponsors and partners:

CG 13, Ricard International, Barclays’ Bank, La Boâte, FBCCI, Marseille Pullman Palm Beach Hotel, EPIM, AmCham, AngloInfo, UCCCAB, Dolce Frégate, EPWN, KPMG, Wall Street Institute-Aix en Provence and Marseille, Chocolats Puyricard, The Dale Carnegie Institute, Euromed Management, Currencies Direct, Deloitte, IAE, DeVere Group, IBS, Provence Promotion, SBKG, British Council, Ringlé, Roy & Associés, AFEX, Neville Peterson LLC and Real Land Group.

We would like to thank them for their continued support and to assure them that we aim to enhance their exposure through actions that increasingly cater for the business community’s needs and interests.

Feel free to take a look on our new website for more information or click directly on the above links.

Looking Forward to 2013

The next LA is on 31/01/2013 in Marseille, with the scheduled presence of the British and American consuls – so save the date!

Sponsors & Partners

The MAABN succeeds thanks to the energy and participation of our partners and sponsors and we are delighted to welcome new ones on a regular basis. We continually try to innovate and improve our offering to sponsors so that they can continue to benefit from the close relationship with the MAABN‘s board and members and from our mutual support of each other’s events, providing a connection to the wider English-speaking community.

Each month of 2013 will see our regular Language Apéros ‘hosted’ by a named sponsor, a great way for a sponsor to present a regular event -and an interesting theme for each LA.

Thank you to all of you for your enthusiastic participation throughout 2012; we look forward to welcoming you back in 2013. If you have regularly attended our events without having become a member, 2013 should be the year you consider formally joining the MAABN. We continue to steadily increase the number of individual memberships every year. Your membership allows us to offer increased benefits to all. Thank you again to renewing members and thank you in advance to new members.

Through the MAABN‘s participation in the UCCCAB (Union des Chambres de Commerce & Clubs d’Affaires Bilateraux), we offer you connections not only with the British and American consulates and American and Franco-British chambers of commerce, but also with the UCCCAB member organisations representing many different countries including Belgium, Germany, USA, UK, Armenia, Morocco, Greece, Italy, Turkey and Israel.

Membership benefits include:

  • Savings on your Language Apéro entrance fees (half-price);
  • Savings on all special events at member rates;
  • Member-only offers from partners and sponsors;
  • Exclusive access to our online member community – ability to post about your business;
  • Three ways to promote you or your business: presentation at an LA; follow-up summary on our e-newsletter; online via our member webspace;
  • You will be the first to hear about special events and have priority to sign up.

Our events are aimed at professionals including -amongst others- entrepreneurs, company directors, independent consultants and artisans. The MAABN‘s events provide an excellent opportunity to build and enlarge your network of contacts and to meet and exchange with local business and community leaders with an international dimension, while conversing in English. You are also welcome to invite others to join you at events as non-members.

Language Apéros in Marseille & Aix (see calendar for dates)

language-apero-marseilleThe format of our Language Apéro is designed to make EVERYONE feel welcome. We encourage you to bring friends and contacts to enjoy an evening of business language-apero-aixnetworking in English. Each LA is “hosted” by one of our main sponsors, giving you the opportunity to find out more about them and their activities. The evening continues with plenty of time for networking and the opportunity for several members to make short 5-minute presentations on their business activities.
The opening Language Apéro on 31/01 in Marseille will include New Year Wishes from our honorary presidents.

Summer (14/6 tbc) & Christmas Parties (7/12 tbc)

These events are hot property, combining as they do great venues with great food and wine, music and entertainment for a moment of relaxation and enjoyment in the company of our dynamic English-speaking association’s members. Once again, the MAABN Summer Party will be held in the gardens of Chateau Ricard (subject to confirmation) and the Christmas Party at the exclusive Pullman Palm Beach Hotel on the Corniche in Marseille. Thanks to our sponsors, we always have fantastic lottery prizes at these events.

Conferences in 2013

marseille2013We plan to organize a conference with Euromed Management School on a future (and hypothetical) Euro-US Free Trade Area. The tentative date for this first event is in the week of May 20th. We are also supporting an event to commemorate Varian Fry as part of the MP2013 celebrations. Further details of these and other conferences will be announced in the newsletter.

In Closing

The MAABN will continue to promote and support business relations between our home countries and the local business community and to represent the interests of AmCham and the Franco-British Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the Aix-Marseille area.

We would like to thank our honorary presidents, the British and US Consuls, for their active and essential support and to the MAABN team, who all give of their time and creativity far beyond the call of duty and whose efforts are reflected in the MAABN‘s growth and continuing success.

A very Happy New Year to the MAABN community!
