Varian Fry Dinner-Conference October 1, Marseille

Varian Fry – Yesterday and Today: Rediscovering the Villa Air-Bel

  Dinner-Conference on Tuesday 1 October 2013 at 7:00 pm
at Les Arcenaulx, 25 Cours d’Estienne d’Orves, Marseille 13001

A dinner-conference is being organized to commemorate the work of Varian Fry (1907-1967), the American journalist who helped thousands of people escape from Vichy France.  During the dinner-conference, the speakers will recount the fascinating story of Varian Fry and his heroic actions in Marseille during the resistance movements (1940-42).

Fry_1Compared to Oskar Schindler, this brave American hid and housed hundreds, including artists and intellectuals such as André Breton, in the famous Villa Air-Bel in the La Pomme neighborhood and helped them to escape Nazi oppression.

At this event, the Villa Air-Bel, long ago destroyed, will be brought back to life thanks to the speakers’ lively stories of what happened there and the projection of Alain Guyot’s magnificent virtual images of the villa itself. Full historical context and project presentation.
