Borders Inside/Outside at La Friche, June13-30

A Dialog Between Art, Prison and Society
June 13 to 30? 2013

The Lieux Fictifs association presents “FRONTIERES dedans/dehors” (BORDERS Inside/Outside), from June 13 to 30 at the Friche La Belle de Mai in Marseille.

The project questions the notion of “border” from the standpoint of the prison and through the shared creation of works by artists, whether inmates (inside) or persons (outside) the walls.

Two shared creation projects bringing together artists, inmates (inside) and persons (outside) the walls are being presented at Marseille’s Friche la Belle de Mai: “In the Solitude of Cotton Fields” and “Images in Memory, Mirrored Images”.

A European conference with the artists, institutions, universities and cultural workers who have been involved in the project since the beginning –plus any new partners who wish to contribute- will initiate this exchange of thoughts on the notion of BORDERS inside/outside from the standpoint of artistic creation in prison. The conference will include an arts programme featuring films, photographs and video installations made with inmates in European prisons

JUNE 13 TO 30

In the Solitude of Cotton Fields

Film installation, 120 min – Caroline Caccavale and Joseph Césarini

The film version of the play by Bernard-Marie Koltes, the 27 actors including inmates of the Baumettes Prison and inhabitants of Marseille. The work explores inertia and movement, the ideal and the real, transgression and the norm.

The 18 inmates and nine outsiders occupy the same set, a disused factory building, of which a part has been recreated inside the prison to give the impression of them being in one and the same place. For the participants, all of different origins, nationalities, languages, ages and social backgrounds, “In the Solitude of Cotton Fields” becomes both the common language and ground, the meeting place and the horizon.

The audience is placed at the centre of a multicast on four screens.

Produced by Lieux Fictifs in cooperation with Marseille-Provence 2013, the Alzhar Company and the Friche la Belle de Mai.

Salle de la Cartonnerie, Friche de la Belle de Mai.
Performance times: 14.30 – 18.30 – 21.00 Monday to Sunday. Closed on June 13, 25 and 26.
